Driver dies in hospital after car crashes into stone pillar of railroad bridge in Reading

Oct 16, 2024

A city man died when his car slammed into a railroad bridge abutment in north Reading, according to the Berks County coroner’s office.

Thomas R. Marty, 53, was pronounced dead at 3:01 p.m. Sunday in Reading Hospital, about six hours after the crash. He died of chest injuries, officials with the coroner’s office said.

A ruling on the manner of death is pending.

In the crash report, Reading police said Marty was the sole occupant of the car that was traveling northbound between Richmond Street and Crescent Avenue when the crash happened at 8:55 a.m. A witness said the car hopped the raised median and hit a stone pillar of the span carrying the railroad tracks over the road.

The witness said no other vehicles were around the car when the crash happened.
